Film Review - Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)

Raya and the Last Dragon is the new Disney Animation film and stars Kelly Marie Tran as the voice of Raya, a survivor of the species known as the Druun who have decimated the land and turned many of its habitants to stone and her only hope now is to find the lost Dragon Gem so she can summon the Last Dragon and bring peace and freedom back to her land and the people within it but there are others who seek the Dragon for their own ends.

Raya and the Last Dragon is a very good and very effective Disney Animation film and among their most recent efforts this and Zootopia from 2016 are my favorites and like that film I had a big smile on my face throughout a lot of this film as I was really enjoying this adventure.

And firstly I must say that the world building in this film is very excellent and looked great on a big cinema screen, the various lands while at times feel like they take inspiration from the Snap in the last 2 Avengers films they make it work very well, some make use of water to build their environment around, another is a snow bound wasteland, another is a desert ala Mad Max while another feels like an Indian kingdom and all of these areas are really nice to look at and explore and I really feel for those who will not see this on the big screen as it was a real treat there visually.

Secondly the group of characters that accompany Raya on her journey are a neat bunch each representing their respective areas and they make a fun bunch, first there is Tuk Tuk this big rolling ferret type character who reminded me a little of Abu the Monkey from Aladdin then there is this young kid who is a shrimp chef, a con baby with monkeys, a warrior the last of his kind and others and they form a nice band of adventurers that I got behind.

Also Kelly Marie Tran is great here as Raya and I loved seeing her get a role to sink her teeth into after what happened with her in the new Star Wars films where it felt like a waste all the more of her after this, Akwafina at times feels like she’s doing the same kind of improv performance Robin Williams did in Aladdin but after a while she stops doing that and delivers a solid performance and the other voice actors were good here too plus there is some great weaponry on show here as well.

And lastly there is a short in front of this film called Us Again about an old couple who become the young dancers they used to be during a rain storm in their city and it is very nice with some great visuals and music.

And so that was Raya and the Last Dragon and if you can see it on a big cinema screen please do so as it is well well worth it, 3 and a half out of 5.
