Film Review - Beast (2022)

Beast stars Idris Elba as Dr Nate Samuels who has come to the Savannah in Africa with his daughters (Leah Jefferies and Iyana Halley) who are mourning the loss of their wife and mother, while in Africa he meets up with an old friend Martin (Sharlto Copley) and they begin to traverse the Pride but a rogue lion is prowling the lands and Nate and Company had better Be Prepared to defend themselves.

Beast more or less does what it says on the Video Box, its 90 odd minutes of Idris Elba vs Evil Mufasa and for what its worth it did that job pretty well for me, it didn’t bore me in any way but it wasn’t also a movie that made me “Wow that was really worth seeing” but its good old fashioned B movie fun and I found it entertaining.

One thing that this movie does very well is use one continuous take editing very well, it helps to build the tension and the dread as Nate and his family try to survive their place in the circle of life against the evil Lion as Idris tries to fight off with a knife and his bare hands and those moments along with the one take editing made this worthwhile fun though I wish that Idris got to keep his natural British accent as his American one in this movie wasn’t that great.

As for the rest of the cast their fine though Copley reminded me a lot of Jake Gyllenhaal whenever he was on screen and the 2 young girls are okay but this is very much the Idris Elba vs Evil Mufasa movie.

And that is Beast and from the day you walk out of the cinema and join the stampede in the circle of life you won’t exactly feel the love tonight for it but it will find its place in the fun creature feature department, 3 out of 5.
