Film Review - Encanto (2021)

Encanto is the newest Disney animation film and it takes place in Colombia at the Casa de Encanto home to a magical family who each receive their special gift when their times comes except for Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz) who never got a special gift and it makes her feel like an outcast in front of her family, but when the Magic becomes endangered she sets out to restore it and her family’s special gifts.

Encanto was not a Disney film that was for me I’m afraid, I found it very forgettable for the most part but before I delve into that I will delve into what I do like.

Firstly I do think that the film is very nicely animated, the humans in particular look more realistic looking than what you might be used to in other animated films, perhaps Disney have learnt a thing or two from their siblings at Pixar in terms of how to digitally animate human characters and have them look more realistic, also some of the magical gifts are nicely animated as well, some have super strength, one can talk to animals, one can see the future and one can make roses appear from anywhere.

And all of that is very visually appealing especially the future sight and rose creation gifts and also the film has some nice musical numbers that were very nice to listen to in the cinema sound.

But as I mentioned this movie for me was very forgettable and that is mainly because I didn’t really get all that invested in the main story all that much, Mirabel and her family story are nice and all but I just didn’t really get into all that much, it never really felt very dramatic or emotional and the whole thing about her being the only non magical member of her family could’ve been something if properly developed but that part of it only feels partially developed at least for me its touched on here and there but I wish it had been done better.

And also a part of me really misses the older style of Disney animated films with the grand fairytales, humorous side characters, memorable soundtracks, likeable heroes and iconic villains and it feels like more and more Disney Animation and to a lesser extent Pixar have forgotten how to make those kinds of films, don’t get me wrong it’s not that they’ve stopped making them entirely its that they seem more interested in making audiences cry and doing smaller scale stories about families and communities that have a nice message in them instead of crafting a grand adventure like the old days but I’m a crusty old juggler when it comes to some of this stuff but its something I’ve noticed more and more recently with these films even though I’ve liked some of them such as Zootopia and Raya and the Last Dragon.

And so that was Encanto and it has its moments but I just found it very forgettable when it was all over, 2 out of 5.
